About Client

Our client is a South Dakotan Clinic, a renowned healthcare provider based in the USA. The team wanted to modernize its processes and improve efficiency by integrating EDI capabilities into its new EHR platform.

About Client

Challenges

The client used a combination of manual and paper-based systems to store and transfer patient data. Main documents were transmitted using emails and faxes. Separate systems were used for billing, scheduling, and electronic health records (EHR).

In addition, the South Dakotan Healthcare provider faced these main issues:

Lack of Data Integration: The absence of a centralized electronic system made it difficult to integrate data from various sources, such as patient records, laboratory results, and insurance information

Limited Interoperability: The healthcare provider’s existing systems were not interoperable with other healthcare providers and payers, making it challenging to exchange patient information and collaborate effectively

Data Security and Privacy Concerns:The client's reliance on manual processes and paper-based records exposed it to significant risks related to data security and privacy. Sensitive patient information, such as medical history, diagnoses, and insurance details, was susceptible to unauthorized access.

Our Solution

Based on the client’s requirements, we proposed developing an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system built on a cloud-based platform like AWS using the OpenMRS framework. We integrated EDI through the Corepoint integration engine to ensure secure and efficient data exchange.

Here are some of the main elements of our EHR system:

Python-based Data Repository:

Python's flexibility and extensive libraries allow for efficient data storage, retrieval, and manipulation. The data is stored in a MySQL database, a popular open-source relational database management system.

EDI Gateway:

This component acts as a bridge between the EHR and external systems, facilitating the exchange of data using EDI standards like 270, 275, 276, and others.

Integration with External Systems:

The EHR system utilizes APIs to connect with external systems, such as laboratory information systems and pharmacy systems. This connectivity enables real-time access to patient information.

Workflow Automation:

The system automates workflows like appointment scheduling, prescription management, and billing, to improve efficiency and reduce errors.
